When I think of fun free winter activities around town The Loop comes to mind right away. For those who don't know what The Loop is all about it is a free skating loop located in Bannerman Park. Its sort of shaped like a figure eight. with 2 side loops that people can skate on. The facility itself is supurb. Lots of seating, music playing, friendly staff, lights for skating in the night. I must say whoever on St. John's counsel thought up that idea deserves a pat on the back because I truly believe it is a gem within the city.
I went there over the past two days. Once by myself to scope out the spot, another time with Janet and both of us went skating. It was my first time skating in 12 years. Needless to say I was terrified, but by the end of it I was skating The Loop with my camera draped around my neck and taking pictures while skating.
I got 4 pictures in this set. The first is of a random person skating, I enjoyed the fact that she had the whole place to herself, the ice was pristine and I liked the depth of field in the picture.
The second is of one of the workers cleaning the ice. I spoke with one of them today for 20 minutes and we had a lovely chat about what kind of work they do there, how to keep up the ice, the toll that bad weather can play, and the cooling system they have in place below the surface. These people pretty much got zero training on how to maintain the ice using these cooling systems and dealing with the elements so bravo to them and the splendid work they do.
Picture three and four are of Janet. My wife. She is a dandy skater and it was truly a joy to spend a day with her in her element. I hope we get to go back a few more times before The Loop closes for the season.
A long winded post I know, but honestly one of the best things I've done in a while.
