This photo is from a few years ago. The Four Sisters are located on Temperance Street, pretty much at the base of Signal Hill. City Council, once again demonstrating their immense wisdom, disregard for sound development, and absolute willingness to bend to the demands of developers, approved a glass Rubik's cube-style condo be built right across the street - basically right from where this photo was taken.
Development is important, but there's no more space downtown, and without decent transit parking is a nightmare. We can't just build up against the harbour front forever, and almost every developer is granted exemptions to the building code when requested. Why have regulations to begin with? The building is fine enough, but can't it be stuck up off Kenmount Terrace, Logy Bay Road, or Airport Heights where there's not only space, but the need for diversified development?
The Four Sisters were built by a merchant for his four daughters and apparently they're all connected with tunnels - or so the story goes. They've been vacant for a while and have become half sketchy. I don't know who owns them, or if they're for sale, but it would be pretty cool to live in one of these heritage homes.
