Looking to the Narrows from Prescott at Water is going to be very different soon as the view will be obstructed with an Alt Hotel. The empty lot next to Raymonds has always confounded me, why wasn't something done with it? It's a great place for couple of picnic tables or a little park. Sure, Harbourside Park is just up the street, but that's not really a park in the normal sense of a park with a playground. Imagine having something downtown that was family friendly, talk about revitalization.
Well, it's not something we need to worry about anymore. I'm not against development, quite the opposite, but once again the City has shown a total lack of leadership and buckles to the will of yet another project in the cluttered downtown. There are hundreds of places around the city where this would make more sense. Instead we're going to increase traffic congestion in downtown by adding another modern structure on the oldest street in North America and speed up the transformation of the downtown core to look like any other place.
Shortly after I moved to St. John's some 8 years ago I went over Signal Hill for a bike ride and blew a tire out on the trail. Being unprepared-bike-guy I had nothing to fix it with so I walked the bike to one of the great bike shops on Water St. As I wheeled my bike down over Prescott I glanced to the Narrows where a pod of Humpbacks were jumping around just outside. It was an awesome moment and was really one of the things that made me feel like St. John's was home.
Since then, the Narrows have framed a pod of dolphins, numerous behemoth icebergs, and glorious sunrises abound. All this to be viewed now from another hotel, stealing the magic of that intersection.
