"Park my van on the Pacific shore / We got the wax and we got our boards / It's mid-august and the weather' fine / I'm gonna out to shot the pipe lines"
This week we branch out and listen to a bitta Ska! To be even more specific, The Planet Smashers are considered Third Wave Ska, a sub-genre of Ska that has a punk focus and loves to incorporate horn instruments for your musical pleasure. Have you ever seen the movie BASEketball? (holy shit this movie is 20 years old, I feel old AF) If so, that soundtrack featured a lot of Ska music.
So, The Planet Smashers. From Montreal, been together since 1994. Life of the Party is their third studio album. If you are familiar with the Ska genre, this album delivers exactly what it is suppose to: fun, upbeat music, with simplistic lyrics that make songs easy to sing and really push you to get up and dance. I won't lie, there were times during the week when I had this album on while I was doing house work and I was belting out the tunes and jumping around the house like a fool. This is what Ska music is, and The Planet Smashers deliver their product in spades. Surfin' in Tofino is probably my favorite song on the album, but you can't go wrong with Super Orgy Prono Party.
In saying all that, do I see myself ever getting into a "Lets listen to The Planet Smashers Life of the Party album!" mood? I highly doubt it. I listened to the full album probably 4 times during the week and by the end of it I felt like a full album of Ska music was too music Ska music for one day. Surfin' in Tofino and Super Orgy Prano Party are probably the only two songs that I would seek out and listen to, even then I imagine it would be very infrequently. Although who knows, maybe as I grow older and the kids get older, we will just want to rock out and have a dance to some Ska music in the kitchen. Only time will tell.
